Akron Soul Train artist Gregory Hatch weaves pop culture into wool | Arts & Culture

Tarot playing cards, vintage cartoons and drag are just some of the influences in Gregory Hatch’s get the job done showcased in the Akron Soul Coach‘s CapSoul gallery in Downtown Akron by way of July 9.

Hatch works in the medium of needle felting, using undyed and obviously dyed wool.

“I use incredibly hot, soapy h2o to shrink the wool fibers collectively,” he said. “I use a barbed needle device to compress the fibers with each other to make the imagery.”

Hatch has located that felting allows him to create illustrations or photos using the perception of depth and dimension within the substance – one thing he discovered in parallel with his career as a performer.

“When I started performing drag, and I started off performing makeup, I began understanding the notion of highlights and shadow. “I choose large inspiration from cartoons and comics and visible culture,” he claimed.

He especially cites artwork he observed at the Akron-Summit County library procedure although growing up as perfectly as Akron’s WPA-commissioned murals.

Yet another piece which enchanted Hatch as a baby was the evening sky ceiling at the Akron Civic Theatre – which is across the street from the Akron Soul Train’s CapSoul Gallery at 191 S. Main Avenue. It is open Wednesday via Saturday from 11 a.m. until eventually 4:00 p.m.
